Our Lower School comprises Years 3 and 4, covering Lower Key Stage Two. At The Beacon, we are determined to keep the love of learning and discovery burning brightly for all boys. These years are exceptionally important as the boys grow in independence and confidence in both their learning and choices.
There are four classes in both Years 3 and 4, with pastoral care at the heart of the class teachers’ role. Our small class sizes mean our teachers have the time and experience to look after the individual needs of each boy.
Lower School enjoys a broad and balanced curriculum where your son will be taught the core subjects by his class teacher, but benefit from specialist lessons in International Studies, Drama, Music, Outdoor Learning, PE, Art, Games and Science. In Year 4, the boys benefit from further specialist teaching in French, Spanish, Design & Technology and Cooking & Nutrition. The boys enjoy a variety of trips, including a residential trip to Shortenills Environmental Education Centre, as well as themed days, such as our much-loved Egyptian Day – all of which enhance the boys’ classroom learning.
Academic ambition is encouraged and the work is differentiated to ensure all the boys progress. At the same time, our Beacon values of kindness, integrity, respect and good manners are highly regarded. We have an award scheme that celebrates both academic excellence and effort, as well as our kindness values. The House system is also introduced in Year 3, and your son will take part in inter-House competitions and events like House debating or football, which really help to foster team spirit.
Our Sport For All approach means that all boys at all abilities will be coached and encouraged to develop a love for sport, which will last a lifetime. We understand the importance of exercise in a boys’ education, which has repeatedly been shown to improve academic performance and focus. There are four sessions of Games and PE each week and all boys have the opportunity to play in inter-school fixtures, as well as House matches.
Stimulating creativity is integral to The Beacon from Reception upwards. Music, Drama, Art and Design & Technology all develop creativity, confidence and communication. The boys in Lower School take part in playlets and larger musical productions such Madagascar Jr and Dr Dolittle Jr. They also have opportunities to take part in music ensembles, choirs and our impressive orchestra. Individual music and LAMDA (music and drama) lessons are available at The Beacon and learning at least one instrument is very much encouraged.
Our desire is for your son to thrive at The Beacon in a happy, secure and stimulating environment. Wherever your son’s talents lie, he will be supported and encouraged to explore and discover new strengths and abilities.
