Bakers Beacon Blog Week 18 2025

Dear Parents,

I look forward to seeing all quizzers at the BPS Quiz Night later this evening.  The boys have been their normal enthusiastic selves when asked, often at very short notice, to perform and contribute – “I don’t know that song Mr Baker…no, I’ve never heard that one before…ok, I suppose I could learn it…within the next two minutes?  Ok, I’ll do my best…”   I ran the Quiz past my wife Brigid last night; she’s pretty smart and knew lots of the answers but still proclaimed on occasion “no, that’s too difficult, you can’t put that in.”  We’ll see, Beacon parents are pretty clever so I am sure it is suitably pitched.  I always think the best quiz questions are ones ‘you know but can’t recall’ or at the very least ‘guessable’; hopefully we have most in that category and there is something in there for all knowledge banks.

At this and our other BPS events this year, we are raising money for local charities as well as improving the facilities at the school for all current and future boys to enjoy.  Having completed the ICT Room and Cooking and Nutrition Room in recent years, the BPS attention now focuses on Willsfield.  As part of a broader school strategic development of our games pitches, we are looking to update the cricket nets, wickets and surrounding areas this year.  With so many of our boys loving their cricket, we need equally strong and impressive facilities that look a bit more ‘Beacon’.  The ‘before’ and potential ‘after’ are below and could be in place for this upcoming term of cricket.  With the boys dominating local competition and many representing the county, imagine how good they would be with the access to this new facility.  Considering England’s poor performance in the One Day International versus India yesterday, investing in Beacon cricket seemingly couldn’t come soon enough…

Have a good weekend,

Nick Baker
