The importance of sustainability and environmental issues are embedded in our core curriculum in all years, and we make use of our vast grounds and varied clubs to extend this focus. We are always looking for ways to improve our eco-credentials, introducing initiatives such as extended recycling schemes, swapping to a green energy supplier, tree-planting on site, reducing energy use, saving water and encouraging boys to walk to school or to use our extensive bus service.
Summer Term 2019 was officially renamed as our Green Term, and the whole Beacon Community were tasked with helping our School to become more sustainable. Aided by the kind donation of recycling bins from Biffa, the boys were inspired to recycle paper, food, glass and batteries and to reduce our general waste. The results of this campaign have been outstanding, with a 27% increase in recycling and a 20% reduction in general waste at The Beacon.
Our kitchen teams are committed to improving our sustainability, and all our waste is recycled (or composted). As most of our food is cooked on site using local ingredients, our requirement for packaging is reduced. However, 100% of our plastic packaging is now fully recyclable or biodegradable. The boys have also been encouraged to recycle books, shoes and clothes through various charities.
Our Eco Council comprises eight boys, nominated by each year group, who meet weekly to form green ideas and initiatives. They help inspire and motivate the whole Beacon Community, through local litter picks, further recycling schemes and sharing green top tips in our weekly Newsletter.
Planting, growing and cooking with our own herbs and vegetables are a great way for all our boys to get more involved in our bid to be sustainable. In Pre-Prep, the boys are proud to grow their own peas, tomatoes, beans and potatoes in the Pre-Prep Garden, while the boys in Year 3 chose to plant a variety of different herbs, learning about plant life-cycles at the same time. Our Mindful Gardening Club, which takes place in our newly-created Kitchen Garden area is a fabulous opportunity for all boys to get involved.
We are pleased to offer electrical charging points on site here at The Beacon, available to all parents and staff. If you would like to use them, you need to register via this App providing your first and last name, along with your email address to dsanderson@beaconschool.co.uk.
