We have been getting into the spirit of Maths Week at The Beacon, which is a celebration of all things Maths bringing attention to the importance of Maths in our everyday lives. This week set out to encourage children to pursue Maths by promoting a more positive and inclusive approach. Maths week is a fantastic opportunity for children to engage in math activities, which they may not get a chance to experience in a normal lesson.
Over the course of the week, the whole school participated in different Maths activities designed to challenge their thinking and develop their Maths problem-solving skills. The week included Miss Palmer creating ‘Palmers Puzzles’ that were cited around the school, there were Pi Recital posters, as well as The Happy Puzzle Company paying us a visit.
On 14 March, we celebrated Pi Day, a day in which Mathematicians, Scientists and Math lovers around the world celebrate the mathematical symbol pi. Our boys have been creating some amazing ‘Pi Posters’ and completed investigations in their classes. We also held a ‘Pi Recital’, which our boys loved getting involved with, and to add to the fun, the winners receive the rare opportunity to ‘Pi’ a teacher in the face. Our boys are very much looking forward to this part!
On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome The Happy Puzzle Company who held puzzle workshops for our boys. They had great fun working with their peers from different Maths sets to collaborate and problem solve various fun Maths games.
Boys in Year 4 enjoyed taking part in a research task learning about their favourite Mathematicians. They boys used iPads to research the Mathematician who they admired the most and produced some excellent posters filled with interesting facts.
Also this week, our boys enjoyed taking part in various competitions that have been running throughout Maths Week. We hosted ‘Who wants to be a Maths Millionaire?’ where boys from all year groups took part in completing graduated Maths questions. Our Beacon Community also enjoyed daily ‘Palmer’s Puzzles’ which were posted on social media as well as around the school for our boys to enjoy. It was great to see the boys getting so involved.
Our amazing Year 8 Mathematicians sat their Pink and Grey UK Mathematic Trust Kangaroo challenges on Thursday. We very much look forward to receiving their results.
We ended the week with a House Countdown challenge. A big congratulations to Cromer for winning and showcasing your amazing on the spot arithmetic!
Next week we have a Maths Magician visiting so watch this space.
