Giving Back on World Book Day

This year on World Book Day (Thursday 5 March) we have two worthwhile book-based charities in Africa to ask you to consider supporting.  The first is Bookbus which provides books and literacy via mobile libraries in Zambia.  The CEO of Bookbus, David Gordon is coming in to talk to the boys on World Book Day about the work that they do and we are hoping to have a couple of Skype lessons with children from Zambia during the day.  If your son would like to do so we are asking for donations of good quality, mainly picture book texts to send out to Zambia.  Pre-Prep boys will be designing bookmarks and bookplates to go inside the books with messages for the children receiving them in Zambia, older boys can just write a message inside the books themselves.

We are also collecting any surplus English, French or English/French dictionaries that you may have at home. These are being shipped out to Rwanda by Annabel Johnstone (daughter of our very own Kathryn Grudgings) to enable contacts she has there, namely Ephraim her former housekeeper, to teach English to his fellow refugees in the UNHCR camp where he now lives in Rwanda. Many of the refugees are from French-speaking Burundi, hence the request for French dictionaries alongside English ones. There are 50 refugees in each of the classes being taught so that is the target number of dictionaries we are hoping to collect.

Thank you to all of you who have given your sons’ permission to purchase books from the pop-up Chorleywood bookshop that we will have in school on the day. Any commission that we earn as a result of your generosity will be spent on buying books for the BookBus charity and also on dictionaries.
