Baker’s Beacon Blog – Week 2 2024

Dear Parents,

Needing to drive the U6 bus, I was early to school on Monday.  First into the car park, the school was empty with few lights on and not its usual welcoming, busy Beacon atmosphere.  As I approached School House though, it was clear I was not the only one on site as a fox scuttled through the gates from the Quad and fixed me with a “what do you think you’re doing here?” glare.  I parked up but the fox remained, now joined with another – I had always assumed foxes to be solitary animals so this had to be a sibling, not unusual at The Beacon of course where we have 64 sibling groups, no surprise then that they chose here to hang out.  There was a moment of standoff but just as I reached for my phone to take a picture of our new pupils, they took off.

These are the first I’ve seen at The Beacon but growing up in Amersham, I used to see scores of wildlife, particularly muntjac deer who would routinely trigger the security lights and light up the back garden in the middle of the night.  And not just wildlife native to this country…my parents returned one week from Amersham Auction Rooms with a full size stuffed crocodile and my dad thought it would be funny to place it next to the pond at the front of our house…created quite a stir on Copperkins Lane as my brother and I watched gleefully from the window at the reaction of passers by…

It’s a ‘Beacon Extra’ week this week as we extend the school experience into Saturday with the BPS Family Fun Day tomorrow afternoon.  So much work has gone into this event and my sincere thanks and appreciation to Faye, Jas and the Committee for what promises to be an excellent occasion and opportunity to socialise with other Beacon families at the start of the new school year.  I look forward to seeing you there…and I strongly suspect, the ‘Beacon fox brothers’ will be observing from the hedgerows…
