World Book Day at The Beacon!
This year’s theme is ‘you are a reader’ and our boys loved getting into the World Book Day spirit. The School has been thriving with creativity this week as Teachers and boys prepared their costumes and activities. Classroom doors have been transformed into famous book jackets, all decorated with colourful artwork created by our boys during the week. Take a look at the photos and see if you can guess any of the books.
Our boys and staff made a huge effort dressing up as book characters on Thursday, with some really imaginative costumes. We had Iron Man walking around school, who was a hit with the Nursery boys! Stick man and Gruffalo also turned up.
Lower School and Middle School boys had the pleasure of taking part in our very own ‘Book Oscars’. This involved boys voting for their favourite book, author, hero and villain in the five different categories. The awards were announced by the boys, and they all had a wonderful time finding out who the winners were. Awards were received on behalf of the authors by various characters such as Nick Fury from The Avengers and Rorshach from The Watchmen (our Teachers).

Over the half term break, we challenged our boys to take part in some ‘Extreme Reading’. They used their imagination to push the boundaries in getting some great images of them reading in extremely unique settings. We had photos of boys taking books to the ski slopes to read on a ski lift and piste, other submissions were boys reading at a theme park, at a museum and in a trolley at the supermarket! Well done boys, there were some great, extremely creative photos! See below a selection of images that were sent in.
We have been so impressed with the fantastic effort everyone put in to their outfits this year, there was clearly some real thought and care put into costume ideas!
Our Librarian, Mr Brown, said “My favourite part of this week has been encountering Pre-Prep classes walking around the school looking at the decorated class doors and extreme reading displays. Their excitement at discovering yet another book-themed display or unusual reading photo was wonderful. Thank you to the Lower School and Middle School boys for taking part so enthusiastically in the Book Oscars. It was lovely to hear the boys cheer for their favourite books, especially when their choices won a Book Oscar! Thanks also to the teachers who took part in the fun by giving acceptance speeches on behalf of the winners.”
Another World Book Day Success!
